“A Private War” is a biography drama based on Vanity Fair Article “Marie Colvin’s Private War” by Arash Amel. Directed by Matthew Heineman, the casts including Rosamund Pike, Jamie Dornan, Faye Marsay, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Stanley Tucci and Tom Hollander.
“A Private War” follows the story of Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike), who is one of the most celebrated war correspondents of our time. Colvin is an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, driven to the frontlines of conflicts across the globe to give voice to the voiceless, while constantly testing the limits between bravery and bravado. After being hit by a grenade in Sri Lanka, she wears a distinctive eye patch and is still as comfortable sipping martinis with London’s elite as she is confronting dictators. Colvin sacrifices loving relationships, and over time, her personal life starts to unravel as the trauma she’s witnessed takes its toll. Yet, her mission to show the true cost of war leads her — along with renowned war photographer Paul Conroy (Jamie Dornan) — to embark on the most dangerous assignment of their lives in the besieged Syrian city of Homs.
In my opinion, “A Private War” is a great movie but also very hurtful. The director wrapped the movie beautifully. The best part of this film is Rosamund Pike, who plays Marie Colvin in the film, she gave very strong and outstanding performances and worth an Oscar. She made me believe that she is Marie Colvin, not Rosamund Pike, I could never think about anyone else who could pull off the character of Marie Colvin expect Mrs. Pike, her performances really blew me away, and the fact that she wasn’t even nominated in Oscar was a tragedy. The rest of the casts also delivered strong performances like Jamie Dornan who plays Conroy.
The soundtrack and the sound mixing were outstanding, the story and the directing were also great. There are some scenes that almost made me burst into tears. And I think this is another war movie that move me and almost made my cry aside “Saving Private Ryan”.
Overall, “A Private War” is drama film that shown the side of humanity, the war and the important of journalism to the world. “A Private War” may not be the best war drama film, but it’s sure worth to watch.
