“At Eternity’s Gate” is a biography drama film directed by Julian Shcnabel and starring Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, Oscar Isaac and Mads Mikkelsen.
“At Eternity’s Gate” follows the story of a famous painter, Vincent van Gogh and his live in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, France.
‘At Eternity’s Gate” gave us the good casts and the bad dialogues. “At Eternity’s Gate” had A-list actors including Dafoe, Isaac and Mikkelsen, and in here Dafoe shines, and well… he deserves Oscar nomination for his portrayal of van Gogh.
But to me, the most distracting of this film is the shaky camera and the dialogues. The dialog seemed like it was from a text book…actually more like a sophomore college essay about Van Gogh. The dialog was based on letters by Van Gogh…but it was distracting because it did not sound of the period or the time.
But, “At Eternity’s Gate” also gave us such beautiful sceneries and landscape. Though the ending was so tragic and hard to watch, but still it’s pretty decent drama.
Overall, “At Eternity’s Gate” had so much potential to become of the best biography films, but failed to be one because of the shaky camera and bad dialogues. But it you fan of Willem Dafoe, sure you have to watch this film, he’s the best in this film.
