Movie Review: “Boy Erased” (2018)

Boy Erased is a memoir by Garrard Conley, and it was adapted to the screen by writer, director, and actor, Joel Edgerton. Follows the story of the son of a Baptist preacher is forced to participate in a church-supported gay conversion program after being forcibly outed to his parents.

In my opinion, the heart and the soul of this film of course the young actor Lucas Hedges, who gave one of the best performances of his carrier. Its even better than his acting in “Manchester by the Sea”. He plays Jared Eamons so beautifully, and in my opinion, his performance in this film is more complicated and exposes his amazing skills as an actor. In the movie, Lucas Hedges shows a personal way of searching truth and being a witness to the the psychological pressure in the Christian community. Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton were also gave one hell of performances in this film. And the rest of the supporting characters also gave their best performances.

And also, there are few scenes that going to make you burst into tears, like scene from Nicole Kidman and Lucas Hedges in restaurant, that was so heartfelt and gripping.

The cinematography in this film itself is done like an average drama movies, nothing special. And the music, we barely hear any music, and background music in that matter, except for Revelation from Troye Sivan, which I believe would be nominated in Oscar this year.

Overall, “Boy Erased” is a beautiful movie, beautiful cause its real, beautiful cause its heartfelt, beautiful cause in the end, we have to love our self, we have to accept our self, because our love is equal, and we ara deserve to be happy.
